School Slacks Alteration Guide: Tailoring Tips for Retail Shops
For school uniform retailers, offering basic alteration services or guiding customers on alterations can be the difference between a one-time sale and a loyal, returning customer. SONY Selex school slacks are made from poly-viscose fabric, which has specific characteristics that affect how alterations should be done. This guide covers the most common alterations — hemming, waistband adjustment, and leg taper — with practical advice for both in-store tailors and customers doing minor adjustments at home.
Why Poly-Viscose Requires Specific Alteration Techniques
Poly-viscose is a blended fabric combining polyester and viscose. Unlike pure cotton, it has a degree of stretch and recovers its shape well. However, it is sensitive to excessive heat, and the viscose component can fray if cut without proper finishing. Understanding these properties is essential before starting any alteration.
Key properties relevant to alteration:
- Slight two-way stretch — cut edges can fray if not overlocked or sewn promptly
- Responds well to steam pressing when slightly damp
- Holds a crease well once pressed correctly
- Colour may transfer slightly during ironing — always use a pressing cloth
- Seams should be sewn with a slight zigzag or stretch stitch to accommodate movement
Hemming: The Most Common School Slacks Alteration
Hemming is by far the most requested alteration for school slacks. Students grow quickly, and parents often buy one size up to extend the life of the garment, requiring the hem to be taken up initially and then let down later.
Step-by-step hemming process:
- Have the student wear the slacks with the shoes they will wear to school. The correct length is just to the top of the shoe — not dragging, not above the ankle.
- Pin the hem at the correct length, folding upward evenly on both legs. Use a chalk marker or washable fabric marker to mark the fold line.
- Remove the slacks and measure the excess fabric below the fold line. On SONY Selex slacks, there is typically 2–3 cm of seam allowance in the original hem.
- Decide how much allowance to leave for future letting-down. For growing children, leave 3–4 cm of allowance inside the hem.
- Overlock or serge the raw edge before sewing the hem. This is critical with poly-viscose — without finishing, the edge will fray within a few washes.
- Sew the hem with a blind stitch or slip stitch for the cleanest finish. A topstitched hem is faster but less professional looking.
- Press the finished hem with a pressing cloth and medium heat steam iron.
Letting down the hem: When the student grows, the hem allowance can be released by unpicking the hem stitching, pressing out the fold line with steam, and re-hemming at the new length. A well-preserved allowance gives up to 3–4 cm of extra length.
Waistband Adjustments
Waistband issues are the second most common request, especially for younger students who may have a slim waist relative to their height. SONY Selex school slacks in sizes 22–32 typically include a partial elastic waistband at the back, which provides inherent adjustability of approximately 2–3 cm.
Simple waistband take-in: For a minor take-in of 1–2 cm, open the side seam at the waistband level, take in the seam allowance, and re-sew. Ensure the adjustment is made symmetrically on both side seams. Press the seam flat.
Elastic replacement: If the original elastic has stretched or is too tight for comfort, replacing it is straightforward. Unpick the back waistband channel, thread new elastic of the appropriate width and tension, and resew the channel opening.
Leg Tapering for Slim Fit Preference
Some students and parents prefer a slimmer leg silhouette, especially in the Classic Fit style. A leg taper alters the inseam and/or outseam to narrow the leg opening and thigh area.
Important note: SONY Selex already offers a dedicated Slim Fit style that provides a tapered silhouette without the need for alteration. Before attempting a taper, check whether the customer would prefer to simply exchange for the Slim Fit size. This saves alteration time and ensures a factory-consistent finish.
If a taper is requested on a Classic or Comfort Fit, taper from the knee downward only. Tapering from the hip can distort the seat shaping and is difficult to execute neatly on blended fabrics.
Retail Tips: Offering Alteration as a Value-Add Service
Retailers who offer a basic alteration service — even just hemming — report significantly higher customer retention. Here is how to structure this profitably:
- Charge a flat fee of Rs 30–50 per pair for standard hemming. This covers tailor time and creates goodwill.
- Offer free hemming on purchases of two or more pairs — this incentivises the recommended two-pair purchase.
- Train your tailor on poly-viscose specifics: overlock before hemming, use a pressing cloth, medium heat only.
- Communicate the value: "We hem your slacks at the time of purchase so they fit perfectly from day one" is a powerful differentiator against online competitors.
