How to Wash School Slacks: Care Guide for Poly-Viscose Fabric Longevity
School slacks take a beating every day — PE on the field, chalk dust in the classroom, lunch in the canteen. Washing them correctly is the single biggest factor that separates a pair of slacks that lasts one year from one that lasts three. This guide covers every step of the washing process for poly-viscose school slacks, the fabric used in SONY Selex garments, so retailers can advise parents confidently and parents can get full value from their purchase.
Understanding Poly-Viscose Before You Wash
SONY Selex school slacks are made from a 65% polyester / 35% viscose blend. Each fibre behaves differently under heat and agitation:
- Polyester (65%): Durable, heat-sensitive above 60°C, prone to pilling with aggressive agitation, retains colour well with correct care.
- Viscose (35%): Soft, breathable, heat-tolerant, but can shrink or distort if wrung or machine-tumbled at high temperature.
The combined blend is crease-resistant and quick-drying — ideal for school use. Maintaining both fibres correctly is the goal of every wash.
Machine Washing: Step-by-Step
Step 1 — Preparation: Turn slacks inside out before placing in the drum. This protects the outer surface from friction with other garments and preserves the colour finish. Close the zip fully and fasten any hooks to prevent snagging. Check pockets and remove pencils, chalk, or paper that can stain or damage the fabric.
Step 2 — Water temperature: Set the machine to 30°C or cold wash. This is the most important setting. Temperatures above 40°C cause the polyester to weaken, the viscose to shrink, and the dye to bleed — all of which shorten the life of the slacks significantly. Cold water cleans daily soil effectively without any of these risks.
Step 3 — Wash cycle: Select gentle or delicate cycle. The reduced agitation protects the weave structure and seams. A standard heavy-duty cycle generates unnecessary stress that weakens seams and causes pilling on the outer surface of the slacks over time.
Step 4 — Detergent: Use a mild liquid detergent at slightly less than the recommended quantity. Powder detergents can leave undissolved residue in the weave that dulls the fabric and makes it feel stiff. Avoid fabric conditioner on poly-viscose — it coats the fibres and can cause the fabric to hold odours rather than release them. Never use bleach, including colour-safe bleach, on school slacks.
Step 5 — Spin speed: Keep the spin cycle at 800 RPM or lower. High spin speeds distort the waistband and seams. The slacks will still come out damp enough to hang dry quickly — excess moisture is not a problem if you hang immediately.
Hand Washing
Hand washing is gentler than any machine cycle and is ideal when a quick spot-clean is needed. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Submerge the slacks and gently agitate by squeezing — never wring or twist. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. To remove excess water, roll the slacks loosely inside a clean dry towel and press gently. Do not twist.
Drying: The Step Most Parents Get Wrong
Air drying is always the correct method for poly-viscose slacks. Hang by the waistband on a trouser clip hanger in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Direct sunlight fades navy blue, bottle green, maroon, and brown significantly faster than indirect light. The weight of the damp fabric naturally pulls the legs straight as they dry, which reduces ironing time.
Avoid tumble drying. The heat and tumbling action weaken the elastic in the waistband, cause shrinkage across the waist and leg length, and create a rough texture on the outer surface that is irreversible. If a dryer must be used in an emergency, select the lowest heat setting (air-dry or delicate) and remove while still slightly damp.
Drying flat (on a mesh drying rack) is an alternative to hanging that works well for slacks — it distributes the weight evenly and prevents waistband stretch that can occur with certain clip hangers.
Stain Treatment: Common School Stains
Ink (ballpoint pen): Act immediately. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and dab from the outside of the stain inward. Do not rub. Repeat until the ink lifts, then wash normally in cold water. Hairspray is an effective alternative if rubbing alcohol is unavailable.
Grass and mud: Let mud dry completely before attempting removal — wet mud pushed deeper into the weave is harder to remove. Brush off dried mud with a stiff brush, then rinse under cold water. Apply liquid detergent and work gently with fingers before washing normally. For grass stains, white vinegar applied for 15 minutes before washing lifts the green pigment effectively.
Food and curry: Scrape off solid residue. Rinse from the back of the fabric with cold water to push the stain outward. Apply liquid dish soap and allow to sit for 10 minutes before washing. Turmeric stains are stubborn — a paste of baking soda and lemon juice applied before washing helps lift the yellow pigment from poly-viscose fibres.
General rule: Always use cold water for initial stain treatment. Hot water permanently sets protein-based stains (food, sweat). Treat stains before washing — never put stained slacks in the machine untreated and expect the detergent alone to remove them.
How Often to Wash School Slacks
Washing frequency depends on season and activity level. During cooler months with no PE classes, poly-viscose school slacks can be worn 2–3 times before washing — airing between wears on a hanger maintains freshness. During summer or after physical education, wash after every wear. Over-washing (daily machine cycles regardless of soil level) accelerates wear significantly. The goal is to wash when needed, not on a rigid daily schedule.
